Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby red. Aromas of dark berry fruits, tobacco and vanilla with a hint of graphite. Flavours of black cherry and eucalyptus. Fine medium tannins with medium-plus acidity define this well-structured, single vineyard release. This elegant wine can be decanted and enjoyed on its own or paired with your favourite charcuterie board.
Vineyard Notes
A cold Canadian winter, unusually wet spring, and dry summer yielded wines with excellent balance and distinct varietal flavours. Crops were lighter than normal, but the vintage will be remembered for unprecedented flood and drought conditions, and a persistent haze from nearby forest fires. While not directly affecting our grape-growing areas, the haze blanketed the sun coverage, preventing the customary heat spikes and positively impacting the growing season by slowing down the grape ripening periods and flavour development. Ripening was assisted by the rigorous leaf plucking and bunch thinning of our dogged, never-say-die vineyard crew. Ultimately, slightly lower yields and phenomenal fruit quality delivered an excellent 2017 vintage, characterized by high flavour concentration, moderate alcohol, balanced tannins, complexity and natural acidity.
Production Notes
100% Cabernet Franc
Winemaker Notes
2017 is a micro-selection of the best lots from our home vineyard on the slope of Penticton’s landmark Munson Mountain, just below the winery. The criteria are all about quality and barrel selection. In 2017, the Cabernet Franc was handpicked and sorted in the Munson Mountain estate vineyard by the Poplar Grove Winery team. The berries were crushed and held cold for three days. The wine was kept separate for 18 months in both new and older French oak barrels and then assembled for bottling. Our Cabernet Franc further developed in bottle for 18 months prior to release.
Other Notes
The 2017 Munson Mountain Cabernet Franc will develop for well over a decade. Drink now through 2030.
