May the enticing and elegant Merlot 2012 be enjoyed a little while longer. Only a few bottles left in large format magnums.
Deep garnet in colour, our 2012 vintage boasts an enticing bouquet of eucalyptus, Okanagan sage, and cherry. The twenty one months in 100% French oak brings a elegant vanilla and rich leather component to the palate. The lengthy finish is abundant with cocoa, bing cherry, and black licorice. The perfect counterpart to rich proteins and creamy pasta dishes.
In 2012, the Winter months of January and February were normal aside for a brief cold snap where, for a few days, temperatures dipped to – 17 °C. The Spring months of March and April saw the season off to a slow start being two and a half weeks behind normal vineyard progress records. Prolonged coolness and low precipitation levels slowed bud break and bud development. May, June and early July had higher than average rainfall, with double precipitation levels in June, up to 80 mm, from norms of 35 mm. Summer was beautiful, mild and long. Temperatures hovered around 30°C and dry arid days created ideal conditions for vine and fruit growth. Late summer and fall months were long, warm and dry, bringing 6 weeks without rain. As a result, there was enhanced fruit ripening and phenolic development. Overall, 2012 was a fantastic growing season in our vineyards.
96% Merlot, 4% Malbec
A blend of all of our Merlot vineyards, approximately 20 acres are planted along the valley from Indian Rock to Osoyoos. For each of the component vineyards, the bunches were handpicked and sorted. The berries were crushed and cold soaked for four days. During fermentation the wine was pumped over twice daily to ensure proper tannin and colour extraction. Post fermentation the caps were kept moist for a further fourteen days before being pressed into barrel. Malolactic fermentation occurred in barrel over the Winter & finished in the Spring of the following year. For 21 months, the Merlot was in a combination of one to three year old French oak barrels until just before bottling when the final blend was determined. Our Merlot was further developed in bottle for a minimum of one year in cellar prior to release.
Ready upon release or cellar up to 10 years.
